TOPIC: Implementation of EN61000-3-2 and amendment A14

ISSUE: 2

REVISION DATE: 12/10/00

PREVIOUS REVISION DATE: 10/10/00

BACKGROUND: The IEC standard EN61000-3-2 was published in the OJ in 1995 and its implementation is mandatory from 1st Jan 2001. CENELEC have published an amendment A14 that diverges from the IEC standard with a date of adoption of Jan 2001. It is expected that most customers will wish to take advantage of the CENELEC standard. The 2 main issues are that the test labs will have to update their test equipment to use A14 and also some customers that must meet Class D under the IEC standard will be able to meet a lower Class A limit with A14.

PROBLEM: How does a test lab proceed after 1st Jan 2001? There are 2 issues:

  1. When to update the test equipment?
  2. What to advise customers?

GUIDELINES:

  1. Test laboratories are strongly encouraged to upgrade their test equipment as soon as possible. Once upgraded compliance testing to A14 may be assumed to indicate compliance to both A14 and IEC 61000-3-2 (1995) + amendments A1 & A2 given the large measurement uncertainty associated with these standards. Customers may use testing to A14 to declare their products to either standard.
  2. If a product is not defined as Class D in amendment A14 then it should be tested to Class A.
