TOPIC: Is a PC system an excluded installation? ISSUE: 3 REVISION DATE: 27.1.98 PREVIOUS REVISION DATE: 20.9.94 BACKGROUND: A large supplier of computer systems wishes to indicate to his customer that the systems/installation they supply comply with the requirements of the EMC Directive. PROBLEM: Is a computer system/installation an excluded installation? GUIDELINES: Opinion was unanimous in that a computer system cannot normally be regarded as an "excluded installation"; the various criteria in the definitions of an excluded installation are not satisfied. Certainly if the system is offered for sale by one manufacturer then by placing it on the market as a single functional unit a declaration of conformity with the essential protection requirements of the directive would be required. Where relevant standards are not available, as is the case for large systems, then the TCF route is always an option.
