THE EXPERTISE OF THE EMCTLA

The EMCTLA (EMC Test Labs Association) was formed to represent the accredited EMC Test Labs. It continues as an active organisation with over 60 members including most of the accredited EMC test labs in the UK, several labs that have joined as Associate Members and an increasing number of EMC Consultant members. We act as a representative group for our members and have regular dealings with the DTI, the European Commission and other organisations. There are regular email distributions of relevant documents such as the text of the new EMC Directive. We are active in the standards committees with representation on GEL 210, (including the chairman Tony Maddocks) and also the three reporting technical committees GEL 210/08, /11, /12.

Our own technical structure is based on 4 technical working groups. These technical committees embody a wealth of technical expertise in all areas of EMC testing and standards. A measurable output of these committees is the technical guidance notes issued. The working groups are divided into the following specialities:

  • WG(A) - Military comments on defence standards and the relationship between military and civil equipment.
  • WG(B) - EMC and other Directive issues for example EMC & Functional Safety
  • WG(C) - Technical Guidance Notes. This committee together with working sub-groups addresses all technical matters related to commercial equipment.
  • UKAS Liaison - covers matters relating to accreditation issues.

In addition we hold regular seminars; over the last few years our topics have included:

  • Developments in EMC Standards
  • EMC Chambers
  • Power Harmonics (EN61000-3-2 and 3-3)
  • FCC Procedures
  • UKAS Accreditation Workshop
  • Military Workshop
  • EMC Directive Workshop

Above all we form an unrivalled body of EMC expertise in the UK.
